So, grab your apron, and let's make this simple and delicious recipe that will make your heart beat faster with every bite!
🥘 Ingredients
- Puff pastry: Thaw according to the box instructions. Use the brand you like. If the dough is very thick, I recommend rolling it out a little beforehand.
- Strawberry jam: Opt for a high-quality strawberry jam. Strawberry preserves contain whole pieces of fruit. These fruits make it difficult to roll the puff pastry, resulting in deformed cookies.
- Granulated sugar
- Vanilla sugar: I like using my homemade vanilla sugar for this recipe. But you can also use vanillin sugar or store-bought vanilla sugar.
See the recipe card for quantities.
🔪 Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 392 °F / 200 °C and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry and spread strawberry jam evenly over it.
- Roll up the dough from the two long sides towards the center until they meet.
- Brush with water and press together lightly.
- Mix granulated sugar and vanilla sugar, then sprinkle some over the rolls.
- Cut into slices using kitchen twine or a sharp knife, ensuring not to press too hard.
- Shape the slices into hearts and sprinkle with the remaining sugar mixture.
- Bake until golden brown.
- Let cool on a rack for about 5 minutes before storing in an airtight container.
🤔 How to cut with a Kitchen Twine
To cut puff pastry dough with kitchen twine, ensure the dough is tightly rolled to prevent jam leakage. Slide the kitchen twine under the rolled dough and gently pull it taut. Swiftly pull the twine through the dough to create clean slices without pressing too hard and risking deformation.

🫐 Variations
This recipe can easily be varied by using different jams (raspberry or fig), spreads (Nutella or chocolate spread), or sprinkles (sliced almonds, coarse sugar, or cinnamon).
Cinnamon also works very well as a filling. Mix cinnamon and brown sugar and distribute this mixture on top of the puff pastry instead of the jam before rolling. Delicious!
🌡️ Storage
Store the puff pastry hearts in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
