This bourbon-forward Old Pal cocktail is stirred with Campari and dry vermouth, then finished with a fresh lemon twist. It is bold, bitter, beautifully red, and perfectly suited to Halloween.

When the evenings turn colder and the skies take on that familiar autumn grey, I start reaching for drinks with a little more depth. This Old Pal fits the mood beautifully.
The cocktail is stirred over ice until properly chilled, then strained into a cold glass. A wide strip of lemon zest adds a fresh citrus aroma and a flash of gold against the deep red drink.
Exactly what a Halloween cocktail table needs, don’t you think?
Campari provides all the drama naturally. There is no food coloring, no sugary mixer, and no elaborate garnish needed. The drink already looks dark, elegant, and just a little eerie.
Serve this Old Pal alongside other Halloween cocktails like a Spooky Kramble Cocktail or a Bloody Sea Breeze Cocktail, or add a few spooky sweets like a yummy Halloween Mousse or hauntingly delicious Spiderweb Cookies for a full Halloween spread.

🔪 How to Make an Old Pal Cocktail
Chill the Glass
Place your cocktail glass in the freezer for a few minutes. You can also fill it with ice and cold water while you prepare the drink. Starting with a chilled glass helps the cocktail stay cold and keeps the finish crisp.
Stir the Cocktail
Add the bourbon, Campari, and dry vermouth to a mixing glass, then fill it generously with ice. Stir for 20 to 30 seconds, or until the outside of the glass feels cold. Stirring does two things here. It chills the cocktail and adds just enough water from the melting ice to soften the alcohol and bring the flavors together.

Strain and Garnish
If you used ice water to chill the serving glass, empty and dry it first. Strain the cocktail into the cold glass. Hold the lemon peel over the drink and twist it firmly to release the citrus oils, then place it on top. That simple garnish is all this Old Pal recipe needs. The golden lemon peel against the red drink makes it feel instantly festive.

Party tip: Batch Version for Six!
This Old Pal cocktail is easy to prepare ahead because the ratio is simple: three parts bourbon, one part Campari, and one part dry vermouth.
For six cocktails, combine:
6 oz (180 ml) bourbon whiskey
2 oz (60 ml) Campari
2 oz (60 ml) dry vermouth
Pour everything into a sealed bottle or small pitcher and keep it in the refrigerator until serving time.
For each drink, pour one portion into a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir until cold, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and finish with fresh lemon zest.
Stirring each serving with ice chills the cocktail and adds the small amount of water it needs. It only takes a few seconds, and the result tastes just as smooth as a drink mixed from scratch.
Pre-batching is especially useful for a Halloween party. Everything is already measured, so you can serve each cocktail quickly without spending the whole evening behind the bar.

Tips & Tricks
- Keep opened dry vermouth in the refrigerator.
- Stir the cocktail rather than shaking it. This keeps the drink clear and smooth.
- Use bourbon for a warmer, rounder Old Pal.
- Choose rye whiskey for a spicier, drier version that is closer to the classic recipe.
- Cut a wide strip of lemon peel if you want it to float on the surface.
- Chill the serving glass before pouring the cocktail.
- Use plenty of ice in the mixing glass. It chills the drink quickly and makes the dilution easier to control.
- If you enjoy Negronis and Boulevardiers, this cocktail is well worth trying.

Notes
A traditional Old Pal is usually made with rye whiskey. Bourbon gives this version a softer, rounder flavor that suits cool fall evenings beautifully.
Keep opened dry vermouth in the refrigerator and use it while it still tastes fresh.
For a spooky Halloween look, cut a wide strip of lemon peel and float it on top of the red cocktail.
If you enjoy a Negroni or Boulevardier, there is a good chance you will enjoy this bourbon Campari cocktail too.

- Use fresh, clean ice and handle it with a clean scoop or tongs rather than your hands.
- Keep opened dry vermouth refrigerated and tightly closed between uses.
- If preparing the cocktail mixture ahead, store it in a clean, sealed bottle or covered pitcher in the refrigerator until serving.
- Do not leave a pre-mixed batch at room temperature for more than 2 hours, or more than 1 hour when the temperature is above 90 °F / 32 °C.
- Cut the lemon garnish shortly before serving and discard any peel that has fallen onto an unclean surface.
- Serve alcoholic drinks only to adults of legal drinking age and enjoy responsibly.
