🤔 Picking the Right White Wine

The options for choosing the perfect wine for this recipe are plentiful! For the best results, opt for a dry, light-bodied wine.

If you prefer a light, zesty white wine, consider any of the following:

  • Pinot Grigio
  • Pinot Blanc
  • Grenache Blanc
  • Muscadel
  • Sauvignon Vert/Friulano

For those who enjoy herbaceous white wines with a “green” herbal profile, featuring hints of freshly cut grass or aromatic herbs like rosemary, sage, and thyme, these selections are ideal:

  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Grüner Ventiler – A beloved choice in Austria!
  • Vermentino

These recommendations offer a great starting point, but don’t hesitate to seek further options or advice from the helpful staff at your local wine shop!

💭 Top tips & Storage

This recipe yields just the right amount for one person, so you won’t have any leftover watermelon spritz sitting around for long! But before you dive in, here are some important tips to keep in mind.

  • Avoid using sweet wine for this drink.
  • Opt for club soda instead of tap water or still mineral water to keep it refreshing with bubbles!
  • Respect the order of ingredients because the last one added will shine through with its flavor.
  • If you’re making a larger batch, consider mixing all the ingredients together in a big pitcher for easy serving.

🙋🏻 FAQ

What is the meaning of “spritz” in cocktails?

A spritz is a type of cocktail rooted in Italy, often served as an apéritif. Typically, it includes Prosecco, various bitters, and soda water, though there are numerous adaptations of this initial recipe. The term “spritz” commonly refers to the bitters utilized in the well-known cocktail, such as Aperol Spritz (delicious!), Campari, and Cynar, among others.

What kind of alcohol is used in a spritz?

Prosecco is a frequent choice for crafting spritz cocktails, but there’s ample room for experimentation with this Venetian wine-based beverage. Personally, I find the Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Brut N.V. from Althea particularly delightful.

What distinguishes a spritz from other cocktails?

While all spritzes are cocktails, not all cocktails are spritzes! While the term “cocktails” encompasses a wide array of drinks featuring various types of alcohol like vodka, tequila, gin, rum, etc., a spritz specifically refers to a wine-based cocktail. Additionally, it typically incorporates soda water or sparkling water, even if the recipe suggests Prosecco.

What was the original spritz?

The original spritz is believed to have originated in Italy over 200 years ago, when Austrian travelers introduced a splash or “spritz” of soda water to Italian wine.

I just loved having this watermelon spritzer on the one summer evening we get here in Ireland. So refreshing and reminded me of one of my favourite German drinks “Weinschorle”, but with a lot more flavor. So delicious.

    1. That sounds wonderful! Yeah, you are so right! It is similar to a Weinschorle! I love experimenting with homemade syrups here!
