We’ve already whipped up several delightful cocktails using homemade watermelon syrup, including the watermelon martini, the watermelon mule, the refreshing watermelon spritz with prosecco, and one of my personal favorites, the watermelon spritz with white wine!

Today, we’re adding to our gin & tonic repertoire with the delicious watermelon gin and tonic. This easy, built cocktail is prepared directly in the serving glass—no need for stirring in a mixing glass or shaking in a cocktail shaker. Enjoy!

🥘 Ingredients

Ingredients for a watermelon gin and tonic: watermelon syrup, gin, cubed ice, and tonic water.
  • Gin:
    • Hendricks: Known for its unique infusion of cucumber and rose, Hendricks adds a refreshing and floral twist to your gin and tonic.
    • Tanqueray: This classic gin boasts a robust juniper flavor, complemented by hints of citrus and spice, making it a versatile choice for any gin cocktail.
    • Watermelon Gin: Enhance the watermelon flavor of your drink with a gin infused with natural watermelon essence, perfect for a summery twist.
  • Watermelon Syrup: I’m using my homemade syrup, but store-bought works just as well.
  • Tonic Water: Check the list below for the best options.
  • Cubed Ice: Essential for keeping your drink perfectly chilled.

See the recipe card for quantities.

🔪 Instructions

Step 1: Choose Your Glass. The preferred glass for a gin and tonic is a highball glass, but a balloon glass works as well.

Step 2: Fill the glass with cubed ice to keep your drink perfectly chilled.

Step 3: Pour in your choice of gin (Hendricks, Tanqueray, or watermelon gin) and add the homemade or store-bought watermelon syrup.

Step 4: Top with Tonic. Pour tonic water into the glass, filling it up. A highball glass typically holds between 240 ml (1 cup) to 350 ml (1 ½ cups).

Step 5: Add a lime slice for a touch of citrus and insert a reusable drinking straw.

Step 6: Sip and savor your delicious watermelon gin and tonic!

Eco Tip: Think about the environment and use reusable straws instead of plastic.

💕 Perfect Pairing

  • Strawberry Shortcake: Fresh strawberries and whipped cream add a delightful sweetness that pairs nicely with the drink.
  • Watermelon Sorbet: A refreshing and light option that complements the watermelon flavor in the drink.
  • Lemon Sugar Cookies: The tangy citrus flavor of lemon sugar cookies balances the sweetness of the watermelon syrup and enhances the gin‘s botanicals.
  • Berry Pavlova: A light and airy dessert topped with fresh berries, which pairs well with the fruity notes of the cocktail.

🍸 Tonic Options

  1. Fever-Tree Premium Indian Tonic Water: Known for its high-quality quinine and subtle botanical flavors, this tonic enhances the gin‘s complexity without overpowering the watermelon notes.
  2. Schweppes Tonic Water: A classic choice with a crisp and clean taste, it balances the sweetness of the watermelon syrup nicely.
  3. Q Tonic Water: Made with organic agave for a slightly sweeter taste, it pairs well with the fruity flavors of the watermelon gin.
  4. Mediterranean Tonic Water: With hints of lemon, thyme, and rosemary, it adds a unique, herbaceous twist to your watermelon gin and tonic.
  5. East Imperial Tonic Water: Offers a light, refreshing flavor with a hint of Thai lemongrass, perfectly complementing the watermelon and gin.

💭 Top tips

When preparing your gin and tonic cocktails at home, it’s important to hold your highball glasses from the bottom and avoid touching the rim. This helps keep your chilled glass nice and cool, making the cocktail taste even better!

You might be wondering, “How do I chill a cocktail glass properly?” The most efficient way is to put them in the freezer beforehand. I usually like to give it at least a half hour, but if you’re planning to have friends and family over for backyard grilling and dinner parties this summer, you could also place your glasses in the freezer the night before.

If you don’t have that kind of freezer space or time between refills for your guests, another method is to fill each cocktail glass with ice cubes while you prepare the fresh lime wedges. When it’s time to pour the cocktails, simply dump out the ice and start serving.
