🔪 Instructions
Yum! Let's get started making this delicious chocolate mousse!
Grab a tall mixing bowl and pour in the whipped cream. Using an electric hand mixer, lightly whip up the heavy cream. Set it aside.
Next, bring the milk to a boil in a saucepan. Once the milk has come to a boil, lower the heat so that the milk is just simmering.
Now take the dark chocolate couverture and add it to the simmering milk! Be careful, so it doesn't splatter and burn you!
Melt the delicious chocolate in the hot milk and mix the two ingredients until smooth.
Finally, fold in the lightly whipped cream in two steps in the last step.
Don't be fooled by the fact that the resulting chocolate mixture is not firm! The mousse will get the desired consistency only after the cooling time.
So, please take a deep breath, relax, and know that it all checks out! 🙂
Now take the little glasses or cups in which you want to serve the mousse.
Divide the finished chocolate mixture among individual glasses and chill in the refrigerator for at least three hours.
Chilling gives the mousse an amazing texture! It gets firm and has an airy texture at the same time. So delicious!
Before serving, decorate the mousse with fresh fruit or whipped cream. Dust it with cinnamon or add white chocolate shavings. Pretty much anything is possible here! It's up to your taste and adapted to the occasion and the season.
Enjoy it, and have fun creating it!
📖 Variations
This dark chocolate mousse is naturally gluten-free. If you also want to make it fructose-free, avoid using fruits that are high in fructose. I can recommend the following fructose-free toppings.
- Chocolate in any form without added fructose
- Avocado
- Cranberry
- Peanuts
- Hemp seeds
- Rhubarb
- Star fruit
- Walnuts
- Cinnamon
- Whipped cream
If you are looking for a healthy alternative, I recommend trying out this chocolate chia pudding created by fitasamamabear.com.
🍽 Equipment
- Small saucepan
- Electric mixer
- Medium bowl
- Wooden spoon
- Small serving bowls
🌡️ Storage
The mousse lasts up to a week in the refrigerator without toppings. I say this because especially added fruit as a topping, gives off liquid, and would ruin the texture of the mousse.
💭 Top tip
Please do not use low-fat milk or low-fat whipped cream. To get a nice texture and develop its extraordinary flavor, you need the high-fat content here.
In fact, if you use low-fat products, your mousse may not get firm!
🙋🏻 FAQ
Can this dessert be made ahead?
Yes, you can make it in advance. The three hours cooling time is the minimum. This dark chocolate mousse can easily be prepared one or two days in advance without toppings. Place the toppings just before serving.
Which chocolate should I use?
You should definitely use high-quality chocolate. High-quality chocolate has higher purity which gives the best taste. For this recipe, I am using high-quality chocolate from Felchlin.

What should the mousse be served in?
For serving, small glass bowls are best, but also cocktail glasses. The key point is to use something where you can see through it. The dark color with the "colorful" decoration on top makes this dessert even more irresistible!
How to top the dark chocolate mousse?
- Top mousse with fresh raspberries, golden berries, blackberries, or strawberries.
- Put whipped cream or ice cream in the middle of the dessert and sprinkle it with chocolate chips, shaved chocolate, or chocolate curls (or any other kind of chocolate).
- Top the mousse with homemade meringue and toast it with a blow torch.
- Sprinkle the top of the mousse with cookies or ground nuts or roasted chopped nuts (almonds or pistachios).
- Dust the mousse with dark cocoa powder.
- Peel a kiwi and fan it. Top the mousse with pieces of kiwi.
