This classic affogato recipe turns creamy vanilla ice cream and fresh hot espresso into the easiest little Italian coffee dessert.

A scoop of vanilla ice cream sits in a glass of dark espresso on a black surface, making a perfect affogato.

This affogato is the kind of little treat that feels almost too easy to be this wonderful. You only need vanilla ice cream or gelato and freshly brewed espresso, but the moment the hot coffee melts into the cold, creamy scoop, it turns into something elegant, refreshing, and deeply satisfying.

And the best part? You can make this dreamy little affogato dessert in just a few minutes.

If you have never made an affogato before, you are in for such a lovely surprise. The word affogato means “drowned” in Italian, and that is exactly what happens here. A scoop of vanilla ice cream is “drowned” with hot espresso, creating that beautiful contrast between sweet vanilla cream and rich coffee.

This classic affogato is the perfect bridge between coffee and dessert, which makes it lovely after dinner, on a sunny afternoon, or whenever you want something special without turning on the oven. Keep it traditional with just espresso and vanilla ice cream, or dress it up with cookie crumbs, shaved chocolate, a chocolate-covered coffee bean, or a little splash of Amaretto for a grown-up twist.

If you want to make the vanilla ice cream yourself, my KitchenAid vanilla ice cream recipe is a wonderful place to start. Homemade vanilla ice cream makes this affogato coffee recipe feel extra special, but a good store-bought vanilla gelato or ice cream works beautifully too.

From Nora’s Coffee Corner

As an SCA-certified coffee brewing professional, I love recipes where the coffee truly gets to shine, and affogato is one of the simplest ways to experience that. For the best affogato, use a fresh, hot espresso shot with enough strength to balance the sweetness of the ice cream.

That contrast is what makes this little Italian dessert so special. Hot espresso, cold vanilla ice cream, creamy sweetness, and a clear coffee finish. Simple, but not boring.

So whether you are wondering how to make affogato for the first time, looking for an easy affogato dessert recipe, or craving a cool coffee treat that feels a little fancy without any fuss, this one is such a keeper.

What you’ll love about this recipe:

  • SIMPLE. A classic affogato only needs two main ingredients: vanilla ice cream and hot espresso.
  • QUICK. You can make this affogato recipe in just a few minutes, which makes it perfect for a last-minute dessert.
  • ELEGANT. It looks and tastes like something you would order in a lovely little Italian café, but it takes almost no effort at home.
  • REFRESHING. Cold vanilla ice cream meets hot espresso for the prettiest creamy coffee contrast.
  • CUSTOMIZABLE. Keep it classic, or add cookie crumbs, chocolate shavings, a chocolate-covered coffee bean, or a little splash of Amaretto.

Just two ingredients

  • Vanilla ice cream or gelato: Pick a creamy vanilla ice cream or gelato that tastes good on its own. Vanilla is classic because it lets the espresso shine without fighting the coffee flavor.
  • Fresh espresso or strong coffee: Brew the espresso right before serving so it is hot and aromatic when it hits the cold ice cream. If you do not have an espresso machine, use a small amount of strong AeroPress, French press, or Clever Dripper coffee instead.
  • Optional extras: Keep it classic, or add a small finishing touch like shaved chocolate, cookie crumbs, a chocolate-covered coffee bean, or a splash of Amaretto.

Can I Make Affogato Without An Espresso Machine?

Yes. While espresso is traditional, you can make a delicious affogato with other brewing methods.
An AeroPress is my favorite option because it can brew a small, concentrated coffee that comes closest to the intensity of espresso. Rather than trying to replicate true espresso, use a higher coffee-to-water ratio than you normally would and brew a short, strong cup.

About 1 oz (30 ml) of brewed coffee per scoop of ice cream works well.

A French press can also work. Use a higher dose of coffee and a smaller amount of water than you would for a standard brew to create a richer, fuller-bodied cup, then serve it immediately while hot.

If you’re using a Clever Dripper, brew a smaller, stronger batch by increasing the coffee-to-water ratio. The result will still be cleaner and less concentrated than espresso, but it can make a lovely affogato if you prefer a gentler coffee flavor.

Whichever method you choose, the goal is a small amount of strong, freshly brewed coffee rather than a full mug of regular coffee. This keeps the ice cream creamy while letting the coffee flavor shine.

🔪 How To Make Affogato?

Brew a fresh espresso shot and scoop the vanilla ice cream into a small glass or dessert bowl.

Pull one espresso shot.
Scoop one scoop of vanilla ice cream into your serving glass.

When the espresso is ready, pour it directly over the ice cream and serve immediately.

Pour freshly brewed espresso on top of the vanilla ice cream scoop.

The magic of affogato happens in those first few moments. The hot espresso melts the edges of the ice cream while the center stays cold and creamy, creating a dessert that is part coffee, part ice cream, and completely irresistible.

Spoon on spoon full of delicious Affogato and enjoy life.

Nora’s Tips For The Best Affogato

  • Use fresh espresso. Affogato coffee tastes best when the espresso is brewed right before serving.
  • Chill the glass. A cold glass helps the ice cream stay creamy a little longer.
  • Serve immediately. This dessert is meant to be enjoyed right away, while the espresso and ice cream are still swirling together.
  • Choose a good vanilla base. Since there are only two main ingredients, flavorful vanilla ice cream makes a big difference.
  • Keep it balanced. Use about 1 oz / 30 ml of espresso per scoop of ice cream, so the coffee does not overwhelm the dessert.
  • Prep for guests. If you are making several affogatos, scoop the ice cream into glasses ahead of time and keep them in the freezer. Then brew the espresso and pour just before serving.

☕️ Optional Toppings And Variations

A classic affogato only needs vanilla ice cream and espresso. If this is your first time making affogato, try the classic version first. Once you taste that simple espresso and vanilla combination, you can start playing with toppings.

  • Cookie crumbs: Add a little crunch with crushed shortbread, biscotti, amaretti cookies, or vanilla wafers.
  • Chocolate shavings: A lovely option if you want a slightly more dessert-like affogato.
  • Chocolate-covered coffee bean: Pretty, simple, and perfect for presentation.
  • Amaretto: Add 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of Amaretto over the ice cream before pouring over the espresso.
  • Caramel drizzle: Sweet and cozy, especially if your espresso has nutty or chocolatey notes.
  • Hazelnut liqueur: Delicious if you love a nutty coffee dessert.

Storage

  • Affogato does not store well once assembled. The espresso melts the ice cream quickly, which is exactly what makes it so wonderful.
  • For the best result, keep the ice cream frozen, brew the espresso fresh, and assemble your affogato right before serving.
  • You can scoop the ice cream into glasses a few minutes ahead and keep them in the freezer, especially if you are serving guests. Pour the hot espresso over the ice cream only when you are ready to serve.

Notes

For an Amaretto affogato, add 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of Amaretto over the vanilla ice cream before pouring the hot espresso on top. Start with less if you want just a gentle almond note, or use the full tablespoon for a more grown-up dessert.
For guests, scoop the ice cream into glasses ahead of time and keep them in the freezer. Brew the espresso and pour it over the ice cream right before serving.
If you do not have an espresso machine, use strong moka pot coffee instead. Keep the amount small, about 1 oz / 30 ml, so the affogato stays rich and balanced.
