How to Brew the Best Reverse AeroPress Coffee?
Today, we are diving into one of the most fun and flavorful tricks in home brewing. The reverse AeroPress method. This tiny brewer already works magic on its own, but the inverted method takes it to a whole new level. It gives you a rounder, richer cup and so much control over your brew that you will feel like a joyful little home barista from the very first try. It is simple. It is playful. And it tastes amazing.
Curious why this method is such a favorite among coffee lovers everywhere

Before we roll up our sleeves and start brewing, I want to link you to a few guides that go beautifully with this one. If you adore immersion brewing with that warm, full-bodied flavor, you will love my French Press Coffee Guide. And if you enjoy chilled coffee moments my Mason Jar Cold Brew and my guide on How to Sweeten Cold Brew are perfect companions. These will help you build up your home coffee routine in a really lovely and easy way.
Now let me chat with you like I would if you were right here in my kitchen. I actually bought my AeroPress very late in my coffee journey, which still makes me laugh a little, because once I made my first cup with it, I thought, Nora, what were you doing all this time? With so many brewing gadgets around, it is easy to skip over this little tube, but goodness, once you start playing with it, the AeroPress becomes your best friend.
It is an immersion brewer with a personality of its own. Cleaner than the French press, thanks to the paper filter, unless you choose a metal one. Stronger than a classic pour over if you want it to be. And always wonderfully forgiving, which makes it perfect for both beginners and curious coffee lovers who enjoy experimenting.
So grab your AeroPress. Give your beans a happy little grind. Settle in for a cozy brew. We are about to make something delicious together, and I cannot wait to show you how fun and satisfying the reverse method truly is. Coffee greatness is right here, and you and I are going to brew it together.
Ingredients you need

Filtered water
Using clean filtered water makes a world of difference. It gives you a sweeter, smoother cup and lets your coffee shine without any distracting flavors.
Fresh coffee beans
Choose beans you love-light, medium, or dark. The AeroPress is wonderfully versatile and brings out beautiful flavors in all roast levels. Grind them fresh just before brewing for the very best aroma.
How To Make Coffee with the AeroPress Reverse Method
Step 1
Heat your filtered water to 93 to 96 degrees Celsius, which is about 200 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2
Weigh out 15 grams of coffee and set it aside.
Step 3
Place a paper filter into the AeroPress cap and rinse it with hot water to remove any papery taste.

Step 4
Grind your coffee to a medium grind. It should feel a little like coarse sand.
Step 5
Turn your AeroPress upside down, place it on the scale, and add the ground coffee to the chamber.

Step 6
Tare it, and start your timer.
Step 7
Quickly pour 210 grams of water over the coffee.

Step 8
Let the coffee steep. At the 2-minute mark, gently break the crust on top. You can use the little stirrer that comes with the AeroPress.

Step 9
Place the rinsed cap on the AeroPress. At 3 minutes and 30 seconds, carefully flip the brewer over your carafe. The easiest way is to set the carafe on top and turn both together.

Step 10
Press down slowly and evenly for about 30 seconds until you hear the soft hiss at the end.

A little caution. Do not press directly on your scale because the pressure can damage it.
Pour your freshly brewed coffee into your favorite glass or mug and enjoy every sip.

Barista Tips
- Keep your water sweet and clean by always using filtered water. It makes every cup taste smoother.
- Grind fresh for every brew. Coffee loses its magic quickly once ground, so a quick grind right before brewing gives you the fullest flavor.
- If your coffee tastes too sharp, try a slightly coarser grind. If it tastes flat or weak, try a touch finer.
- Do not rush the press. Slow and steady pressure gives you a sweeter, rounder flavor.
- Experiment with different beans and roast levels. The AeroPress is incredibly forgiving and loves to show off new flavor notes.

Paper Filter vs Metal Filter
If you are wondering which filter to choose, let me give you a quick and easy explanation.
- Paper filter
This gives you the cleanest cup. The paper catches most of the oils and the tiny particles, so your coffee tastes smooth, gentle, and very round. If you love clarity and a sweet finish, paper is perfect. - Metal filter
A metal filter lets more of the natural coffee oils into your cup. This creates a fuller body and a slightly richer, more pronounced flavor. You will also notice a tiny bit more texture. If you enjoy French press style cups but want more control the metal filter is a lovely option.
Both are wonderful. The choice depends on your mood and the beans you are using. I often switch between them because it is such an easy way to explore different sides of the same coffee.
Grind Size Notes
A medium grind works beautifully for the reverse AeroPress method. Think of it as a touch finer than a French press but a little coarser than your V60 or Kalita. When you rub the grounds between your fingers, it should feel like coarse sand.
If your coffee tastes a bit sharp or bitter, the grind is probably too fine. If it tastes weak or too flat, the grind is likely too coarse. A tiny adjustment goes a long way here. Trust your taste buds. They know more than you think.
Adjusting the Coffee Strength
I start with 15 grams of coffee to 210 grams of water because it gives you a lovely, balanced cup.
If you prefer something stronger, you can easily go up to 16 or 17 grams.
If you enjoy a gentler cup, try 13 or 14 grams.
The AeroPress is sweet and forgiving, which makes it perfect for a little strength experiment until you find your happy spot.
What Is the Crust and Why Do We Break It
Once the coffee steeps, you will notice a little layer forming on top. This is the crust. Breaking it helps everything extract evenly and brings out the sweetest, gentlest flavors from your coffee. If you forget, nothing terrible happens. You still get a beautiful cup, but breaking the crust just adds additional coffee extraction.

How To Clean Your AeroPress
Cleanup is one of the happiest things about the AeroPress. Twist off the filter cap. Push the grounds and filter straight into the compost or bin. Give the seal a quick rinse. That is it. If you want to keep it in perfect shape, slide the plunger back a little so the seal is not stored fully compressed.
