🥘 Ingredients

Ingredients apple crisp without oatmeal - brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, flour, butter, apples.

For the Apple Filling

Apples – Opt for large, slightly tart apples to balance the sweetness of the topping. Varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn work wonderfully because they hold their shape well when baked and have a nice, tangy flavor that complements the sweetness of the crumble.

Brown Sugar – Adds a rich, caramel-like sweetness to both the apple filling and the crumble topping. Light or dark brown sugar can be used, but dark brown sugar will give a deeper flavor.

Cinnamon enhances the natural flavor of the apples. For the most robust flavor, use freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon, which hardly contains any Curamine.

For the Crumble Topping

All-Purpose Flour – Provides the structure for the crumble topping.

Butter, Softened – Soft butter is easier to mix into the crumble topping, helping to create those perfect, buttery clumps. If you forget to soften your butter in advance, you can quickly microwave it for a few seconds but be careful not to melt it completely.

Brown Sugar – Adds sweetness and helps the topping crisp up nicely. Like in the filling, using dark brown sugar here adds more depth and a slight molasses flavor.

Salt – Use fine sea salt for even distribution throughout the crumble.

💭 Top tips

When making apple crisp, choosing the right type of apple is essential to achieve the perfect balance of flavors and textures.

The ideal apples for apple crisp are firm and slightly tart, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn. These varieties hold their shape well when baked, preventing the dessert from becoming mushy.

Their tartness also complements the sweetness of the crumble topping, adding a delightful contrast that enhances the dish’s overall flavor.

Combining these apples gives you a mix of textures and a balanced taste that makes every bite of the crisp irresistibly delicious.
